OSC Strategy Highlights

Strategy 6 - Design and implement a comprehensive gang intervention strategy.

Team Leaders:  Professor Richard Janikowski, Associate Professor and Director of CCCR, The University of Memphis

The Memphis Drug Market Intervention (DMI) began in the Hollywood/Springdale community in January. This proven-effective initiative is currently working to eliminate the drug market and transform the Hollywood/Springdale community by returning control to the residents.

As part of the initiative, more than forty drug dealers are being prosecuted because of their drug-related activities within the community.

Additionally, five individual so have accepted an unprecedented opportunity to redirect their lives with the community’s support through the City of Memphis’ Second Chance Program, HopeWorks and Memphis Leadership Foundation.

"Since the DMI initiative and the aggressive work done by the Memphis Police Department's Organized Crime Unit, crime continues to decline in the Hollywood/Springdale community. February 2010 compared to February 2009 crime is down 36.8%. This is a positive step in bringing our community together and to offer that second chance" said Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin.

DMI is a coordinated effort between the City of Memphis, Shelby County, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee, Memphis Police Department, Shelby County District Attorney General’s Office, The University of Memphis Center for Community Criminology and Research and the Center for Community Building and Neighborhood Action (CBANA), Rhodes College, Memphis Leadership Foundation and the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission as part of Operation: Safe Community.

Monthly community meetings are also being scheduled to update residents and provide opportunities for community involvement. A community clean-up in partnership with the City of Memphis and Springdale Baptist Church is scheduled for April 17, 2010. For more information about the community meeting and clean-up read the Calendar of Events.
