OSC Strategy Highlights

Children and their family members have received vital community-based services thanks to two pilot initiatives in Southeast Memphis and Soulsville working to turn around the lives of youth in our community.

Strategy 9 of Operation: Safe Community calls for the launch of the JustCare 180 program to "turnaround" youth at risk of unruly or delinquent behavior and is led by Juvenile Court Judge Curtis Person.

Through generous support from the Memphis City Council and in partnership with Southeast Memphis and Lemoyne-Owen College Community Development Corporations and Tennessee Voices for Children, the Operation: Safe Community JustCare 180 pilot programs recently concluded.

Implementation of JustCare 180 has helped to identify community assets in Southeast Memphis and Soulsville areas and has invigorated the communities with newfound partnerships, capacity and continued support. Through a "system of care" approach more than one hundred children and over 400 family members have received services including after-school programs, GED support, job training, health and wellness. Additionally, a team of Family Service Providers offered consistent support and opportunities for achievement to the youth and their families. To date 90% of the youth have not have any contact with Juvenile Court since participating in JustCare 180. In essence, they have turned around their lives.

In the Lemoyne-Owen College CDC pilot program seven mini-grants were also funded to proposals for community-based mentoring, cultural enhancement and wellness projects.   As a result, 199 children and 225 family members are being served through these programs in the Soulsville community.

Children and their family members who received services through JustCare 180 will continue to receive support through the JustCare Family Network if they meet the program criteria. JustCare Family Network calls for the development of a service infrastructure that will empower caregivers, youth, and families with the knowledge, skills, resources and support they need for the youth to be successful at home, in school, and in the community.  For more information about JustCare Family Network visit  www.tnvoices.org.
