Crime Update:
City of Memphis Crime Update: January 2010 to March 2010
From January 2010 to the end of March 2010, overall crime was down 32.4% including a drop in violent crime by 33.4% and a drop in property crime by 32.1% across the City of Memphis, when compared to the same time period in 2006.
Shelby County Crime Update: January 2010 to March 2010
From January 2010 to the end of March 2010, overall crime was down 23.1% including a drop in violent crime by 28.8% and a drop in property crime by 22.4% in areas patrolled by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, when compared to the same time period in 2006.
Implementation of the strategic initiative to reduce crime, Operation: Safe Community began in 2006. Crime statistics and updates are systematically compared to 2006 as a benchmark for success towards full implementation of the 5-year plan.

Strategy 11 - Expand and coordinate an adult offender re-entry programs.

As you may know having training for and finding gainful employment is a major obstacle fro anyone who is being released from prison. The Memphis Leadership Foundation (MLF) has developed a very successful training program for ex-offenders and with the support of a major business in our community, Barnhart Crane and Rigging.
Barnhart Crane and Rigging provides office space at their company for training and re-entry classes to ex-offenders going through the MLF's Economic Opportunities program.
More than 8,000 State and Federal prisoners return to Shelby County each year and re-entry services have been vital programs working
to increase public safety by transitioning ex-offenders into becoming
more productive citizens. Through training programs like the one provided by the Memphis Leadership Foundation at Barnhart Crane and Rigging, our community can continually be assured that these individuals are getting the workforce development, placement and structure they need.
Employers also agree that performance-based job training is an ideal opportunity to hire qualified candidates with a newfound desire to succeed. "The individuals that are brought to our company, have made my job easier because I do not have to recruit mechanics myself and I have the opportunity to observe the men and determine their skills before I offer them a position. As you know, I have hired three solid men from the program and they are all doing a superb job," said Thomas F. Nolman.

Mr. Alan Barnhart of Barnhart Crane and Rigging and Mr. Jim Kennedy of the Memphis Leadership Foundation will discuss their innovative economic opportunities program for ex-offenders.

The 16th Annual Crime Victims' Rights
Awards were recently held as part of National Crime Victims Rights
Week. The reception and awards ceremony paid tribute to victims of senseless
violence in our community. Additionally, five
professionals were awarded for the fairness, dignity and respect they
consistently show while supporting victims in healing and the pursuit
of justice.
